DacForge runs its own production infrastructure on Coolify, this site included. Installing Coolify is a shell script. Getting a production-ready Coolify install, with proper TLS, working health checks, DNS that does not fight certificate renewal, and a backup that actually runs, takes about a day of careful work per server. That day is what a Coolify setup consultant trades you. If you want the gory detail, we wrote up what shipping this site taught us in Coolify setup lessons.
What a Coolify setup usually needs
A production install is not one decision, it is a stack of small ones. Each has an obvious right answer once you have tripped over it before:
- VPS provisioning on Hetzner, DigitalOcean, or similar, sized to your workload
- Coolify install with the defaults your setup actually wants
- Domain wiring on Cloudflare with the proxy set correctly so Let's Encrypt keeps renewing
- Traefik as the TLS terminator, configured so apps inherit HTTPS without ceremony
- First app deployed, whether Dockerfile or Docker Compose
- GitHub webhook wiring for push-to-deploy
- Persistent volume sanity check so your database does not vanish on redeploy
- Backups on a schedule, and a test restore so you know they work
We handle that stack in one block of work, then stop. No open-ended retainer by default.
How we configure and hand over
A Coolify setup engagement is scoped as a fixed-outcome block with value-based pricing. We agree upfront on what done looks like (usually a clean install, one or two apps deployed, TLS and domains working, a deployment flow your team can use) and deliver it in a week or two.
The runbook is the part most consultants skip. Ours covers the specific gotchas for your setup, not a generic Coolify tutorial you could find on the internet.
That runbook covers four practical things:
- Which defaults in the Coolify UI are wrong for your case
- How to deploy a new app from scratch
- How to roll back a bad release
- Where the logs actually live when something goes wrong
If you want ongoing help after the handover, a retainer is available. Most clients do not need one.
Self-hosted PaaS vs the alternatives
Heroku and Vercel are frictionless until the bill arrives or a deprecation breaks something load-bearing. Raw Kubernetes gives you infinite control for infinite operational cost. Coolify sits between the two: a Heroku-style developer experience on a server you own, with Traefik and Docker underneath when you need to drop down a level.
For small teams and solo founders who want to keep the data layer under their own control, it is close to optimal. For teams that plan to spin up internal tooling on the same server, pairing it with our internal tool developer engagement is a natural combination.
